Bakken crude headed east by rail

PARSIPPANY, N.J., April 11 (UPI) -- The largest producer of Bakken crude oil in the United States will now deliver oil to an East Coast refinery by rail, refiner PBF Energy Inc. announced.

PBF announced that Continental Resources would deliver Bakken crude to its Delaware City, Del., refinery by rail shipments.

The refinery company in February announced that it completed its second rail facility in Delaware that allows it to take on oil from the North Dakota shale play and Canada's heavy oil. PBF didn't indicate how much oil it would receive from Continental.

Refineries along the U.S. East Coast typically rely on oil from North Sea and African producers. The North American oil boom has shifted some refinery focus, though pipeline capacity hasn't kept pace with production gains.

"PBF has made significant investments in acquiring rail cars and developing our East Coast rail delivery infrastructure to increase our access to North American crude oil, which positions PBF to benefit from these cost-advantaged crudes," PBF Chief Executive Officer Tom Nimbley said in a statement.
