Patience urged with Suncor incident

EDMONTON, Alberta, March 28 (UPI) -- Environmental groups and worried citizens in Canada are urged to show patience during the response to a Suncor wastewater spill, the environment minister said.

Alberta Environment Minister Diana McQueen assured residents that responders were on the scene of an Alberta incident involving a leak of wastewater into the Athabasca River.

She said responders had confirmed the release was stopped and water samples were sent to a laboratory for analysis.

"It is important to know that even though we have requested a rush analysis of the water samples, this does take time," she was quoted by the Edmonton Journal as saying. "We want to make sure that the test results are accurate and that we have a full and complete analysis to share with Albertans."

Suncor said the water itself showed some suspended solids but no oil. Advocacy group Greenpeace sent a letter to the provincial government of Alberta asking for more information about the release. It said information coming from Suncor was slow to develop.

Suncor discovered that a pipe had frozen and burst Monday, releasing wastewater for a oil sands facility into the Athabasca River.
