Eni said it discovered oil at the Vandumbu-1 well about 90 miles off the Angolan coast in 3,200 feet of water. The discovery in Block 15/06 represents the ninth such find in Angola's deep waters, the company said.
Angola is a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and ranks second behind Nigeria in terms of oil production in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The U.S. Energy Agency's Energy Information Administration said Angola aims to produce as much as 2 million barrels of oil per day by next year. Eni said that its net production in 2011 in the country from Angola was 102,000 bpd.
The company expects the well to have a production capacity of more than 5,000 bpd.
