Eni explores LNG options in Mozambique

MAPUTO, Mozambique, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Eni Chief Executive Officer Paolo Scaroni said he discussed liquefied natural gas exports with Mozambique President Armando Guebuza following a major gas find.

Scaroni talked with Guebuza in Maputo about energy projects under way in the South African country.

"Among the issues discussed were the future monetization of the gas resources via development of liquefied natural gas export facilities, and the supply of gas for domestic power generation," the Italian energy company said.

Eni in August announced that it encountered about 656 feet of gas pay in a well drilled to a depth of 17,600 feet offshore Mozambique. The resources are in Area 4 of the company's Mamba North East 2 exploration prospect.

In May, Eni announced its Coral 1 exploration prospect, in the deep waters off Mozambique, contained 7 trillion-10 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The discovery lies within the Mamba complex.

Eni last year described the prospect as the largest discovery in the company's exploration history.
