WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Noting that nearly half of the oil used to produce gasoline comes from foreign sources, a joint U.S. report for consumers provided with a 2013 mpg guide.

A report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy spelled out which makes and models across a broad spectrum of vehicles offered the best fuel economy.

For mid-sized passenger vehicles, the report said the Ford C-Max Energy Plug-in Hybrid ranked No. 1 with a combined 58 miles per gallon.

The report said about 45 percent of the oil used to manufacture gasoline in the United States comes from foreign sources. On average, the United States imports about 19 million barrels of oil per day and more than 60 percent of that is used in the transportation sector.

This week, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration expected trends in vehicle efficiency would cut the gasoline use in the transportation sector by 1 million barrels per day in 2035.

Corporate average fuel economy standards for light-duty vehicles increases to 47.3 mpg by 2025, up from 32.6 mpg in 2011, the EIA stated.

Motor group AAA finds the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded Friday in the United States was $3.37, up from $3.28 reported for the same time last year.
