OKLAHOMA CITY, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- A U.S. energy company working in Ohio said more than 28 million cubic feet of natural gas per day was produced during a test in the Utica shale play.

Gulfport Energy Corp. said that, during an 18-hour test, its Shugert 1-12H well in the Utica shale play produced 28.5 million cubic feet of natural gas, 300 barrels of condensate and 2,907 barrels of natural gas liquids per day.

The company, which has headquarters in Oklahoma, said it would start sending natural gas from the well to a commercial pipeline by the end of January.

Gulfport Energy Chief Executive Officer Jim Palm said the results confirm the company's "high expectations" for the Utica shale play.

In October, the U.S. Geological Survey provided its first assessment of the Utica shale deposit. It said the reserve, which lies underneath the Marcellus shale play, contains 38 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable natural gas and 940 million barrels of unconventional oil resources.

The fields are part of the Appalachian Basin, which the USGS said is the longest-producing petroleum play in the United States.
