ANKARA, Turkey, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- An official from an eastern Turkish province said Friday at least 28 soldiers were injured in an attack on a natural gas pipeline from Iran.

The Anadolu Agency, the Turkish state media agency, reported Friday that the city director from Agri, a border town, confirmed 28 soldiers were injured "in the terrorist attack (that) targeted the gas pipeline."

The attack marks the second time in about as many weeks that militants in eastern Turkey have targeted gas transit infrastructure. Turkish and Iranian media report the incident Friday was the work of the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party, known by its Kurdish initials PKK. There were no immediate claims of responsibility.

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported early this week that at least 18 PKK militants were killed in clashes with government forces in southeast Hakkari province. Three Turkish soldiers were killed in earlier clashes with the militant group.

Iran's state-funded broadcaster Press TV reports that, following the earlier attack, Iranian suppliers were able to restore gas supplies within about a week.
