LONDON, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- German energy company RWE said the start of the Clipper South natural gas field in the British waters of the North Sea marks a first for the company.
RWE Dea, the British subsidiary of the German company, said the first Clipper South well went online at a rate of 42.3 million cubic feet per day.
"We are delighted to have reached this key milestone on the Clipper South project, which is the first of our current growth projects in the U.K. coming on stream," RWE Dea Chief Operating Officer Ralf to Baben.
The first well at the offshore site was developed using hydraulic fracturing. The company said the field is being developed with as many as five horizontal multi-fractured wells. Production is expected to reach 98.8 million cubic feet early next year.
The company started drilling in the field in February. Natural gas from the field, about 60 miles offshore, is transported to a gas terminal and then into the regional grid.
