HOUSTON, July 20 (UPI) -- Anadarko Petroleum Corp. announced it made a discovery off the coast of Ghana that is said to contain good quality oil reserves.

Anadarko said it drilled to a total depth of approximately 10,899 feet in the Wawa-1 exploration well off the coast of Ghana in the Tano block. The company said it encountered roughly 43 net feet of oil pay and 65 net feet of gas condensate pay. Samples from the well show the oil was of light crude grade.

Bob Daniels, senior vice president of international operations at Anadarko, said the discovery complements existing plays in the region. Further exploration of the offshore Tano block is planned for later this year.

Tullow Oil, which has a partnership with Anadarko in the Tano block, marked a milestone for the Jubilee oil field in 2010 when commercial oil flowed from the area for the first time. The company said production there could eventually reach 120,000 barrels of oil per day.

The Jubilee field is one of the richest oil fields in Africa with potential reserves eclipsing 1.8 billion barrels.
