Officials: Colorado gas explosion isolated

BAYFIELD, Colo., June 27 (UPI) -- BP and authorities in Colorado said a deadly explosion at a natural gas compression station was an isolated event.

An explosion Monday in La Plata County, Colo., rocked a compression station operated by BP. The explosion killed one worker and left two others injured. There were 11 workers at the site at the time of the explosion.

BP spokeswoman Julie Levy was quoted by The Durango (Colo.) Herald newspaper as saying "the incident is essentially over."

Levy said the explosion wasn't related to wildfires affecting large areas in Colorado.

Dan Bender, a spokesman for the La Plata County sheriff's office, said a pressurized device in a pipeline triggered the explosion.

"There was pressure being put into a device and that device failed," he was quoted as saying.

The compressor station is the largest for BP in the area. It collects an estimated 30 million cubic feet of natural gas per day from surrounding wells for distribution.
