ABERDEEN, Scotland, May 21 (UPI) -- French supermajor Total said it was looking ahead to restarting natural gas production from the North Sea after confirming its Elgin leak was fixed.
Total announced natural gas was leaking from its Elgin complex off the coast of Aberdeen in late March.
It said Monday that, after five days of monitoring, it was able to confirm that a dynamic kill operation had succeeded in stopping in the leak.
"Several inspection visits to the wellhead platform have confirmed that the leak has completely stopped," a statement from the company read.
None of the natural gas from the Elgin platform had reached shore, and there were few reports of major environmental damage.
Total said the next step is to send workers back to the complex and to set cement plugs to seal the well, an operation that could take several weeks.
Total President of Exploration and Production Yves-Louis Darricarrere said in a statement the company was taking a lessons-learned approach to renewed operations at the complex.
"Now, it is important that we continue to work together with the authorities to conclude the ongoing investigations, take into account lessons learned and define the necessary conditions for restarting production of the Elgin-Franklin fields," he said.
