HOUSTON, May 16 (UPI) -- U.S. energy company Anadarko Petroleum Corp. announced it made a major new natural gas discovery off the coast of Mozambique.

The company announced its Golfinho discovery well encountered more than 193 net feet of natural gas pay off the coast of Mozambique.

Bob Daniels, senior vice president of worldwide exploration at Anadarko, said the prospect is located only 10 miles from the coast, meaning it would be less expensive to develop.

"We are very excited about this new discovery and the value these additional resources represent for the people of Mozambique and our partnership," he said in a statement.

The entire field, named Prosperidade, lies in roughly 5,400 feet of water. It is estimated to hold recoverable resources of at least 17 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

The Golfhino well was drilled to a depth of 14,885 feet in roughly 3,370 feet of water.
