PARIS, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- French energy company GDF Suez announced the inauguration of two thermal power plants that would supply power primarily to copper mines in Chile.
GDF Suez and its subsidiary International Power announced the inauguration of the 150 megawatt Andina thermal power plant and the 150 MW Hornitos thermal power plant in northern Chile.
The thermal power plants would supply 300 MW of power primarily to the Esperanza and Gaby copper mines northern Chile.
GDF Suez Chairman Gerard Mestrallet said, in a statement, the $900 million investment project in Chile represents not only his company's diversified energy portfolio but also its broad geographic reach.
"Chile is an important country for GDF Suez in Latin America and this new development shows the group's commitment to this growing region," he said.
The company described Chile as an attractive market where demand for power was expected to grow 6 percent per year.
GDF Suez also has a stake in a liquefied natural gas receiving and gasification terminal and a 48 MW wind farm in Chile. A 34 MW hydroelectric plant is under construction.
