MOSCOW, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Gazprom said it was ready to examine the possibility of supplying more liquefied natural gas to Japan, the company's chief executive said.

Gazprom chief Alexei Miller met with Masami Iijima, chief executive officer at Japanese energy distributor Mitsui and Co., in Moscow to discuss LNG supplies for Japan.

"The parties were unanimous saying that Gazprom's additional LNG volumes were very important for the energy supply stabilization in the country," Gazprom said in a statement.

Japan in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that crippled nuclear reactors in the northern part of the country turned to natural gas to help cover the energy deficit.

Mitsui has a 12.5 percent stake in operations at the Sakhalin II energy project in Russia's Far East.

Gazprom said it delivered five additional shipments of LNG to Japan with a total volume of 15.5 trillion cubic feet in 2011.
