WFP getting more food distributed in Libya

CAIRO, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- The U.N. World Food Program said it was getting more food aid to displaced Libyans as fighting subsides in the North African country.

The WFP said it was able to get more food aid into southern Libya to help those displaced by conflict. The WFP said it was able to get 30 tons of food supplies into Shoarif in southern Libya for the first time since the international conflict began in March.

The agency said that it's been able to distribute food assistance to roughly 800,000 people in Libya this year.

The WFP said it had operated a humanitarian air service to shuttle aid workers and diplomats in and out of the country. It warned it would have to stop the service by the end of the month, however, because of a "critical funding shortfall."

Flights are already affected, the agency said.

Amnesty International, in a recent report, shamed Europe for its failure to help thousands of African refugees stranded by war along the Libyan border.

The international watchdog estimated there are 5,000 refugees living in poor conditions along the Egyptian and Tunisian borders with Libya.

Nicolas Beger, director of Amnesty International's European office, said the response to the refugee crisis has been "abysmal."
