Maldives considers marine energy

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The Scottish government said it backed marine energy plans in the Maldives, which aims to become a carbon neutral country by the next decade.

Edinburgh said a report was delivered to the Maldives government that assesses the country's potential to use marine energy as part of a plan to become carbon neutral by 2020.

"The Maldives aims to be carbon neutral within 10 years and this study uses Scottish low carbon expertise to help the country meet the challenges of climate change," said Minister for Environment and Climate Change Stewart Stevenson in a statement.

Rising sea levels and global climate change threaten to submerge the Maldives within decades. Scottish scientists said they were reviewing data from currents near the country to provide a model of the marine energy potential for the Maldives.

"We are committed to working with developing nations to share our knowledge and technology in the global effort to meet the challenges of climate change," added Stevenson.

Tidal energy in Scotland represents about 25 percent of the total tidal stream potential in Europe.
