PARIS, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- GDF Suez and its partners at International Power announced they secured power purchase agreements for its wind farm developments in Canada.

GDF Suez and International Power said they had power purchase agreements for two wind farms in Ontario that can each generate 99 megawatts of power. Construction was also started on a separate 99 MW wind project in British Columbia.

GDF Suez owns 70 percent of International Power. The consortium said it secured 20-year purchase agreements with the Ontario Power Authority for each of the wind projects.

The British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority, meanwhile, reached a similar deal for the 99MW wind facility there.

All three projects should cost around $300 million with startup expected in 2013.

"Our global expertise and skills in wind power enable the group to strengthen and continue to grow its position in renewable energy," Gerard Mestrallet, chairman and chief executive office at GDF Suez, said in a statement.

Canada uses taxpayer funds to subsidize renewable energy with the aim of increasing its contribution to the total percentage of electricity generated.
