TEHRAN, July 29 (UPI) -- Natural gas supplies from Iran to Turkey were disrupted when an explosion struck a natural gas pipeline connecting the countries, Iranian officials said.
A blast early Friday struck a natural gas pipeline near Maku, which is near the Iranian-Turkish border, cutting gas supplies, unnamed officials told Iran's semiofficial Mehr news agency.
The report indicated that responders were able to get the blaze under control and extract excess gas from a broken pipeline section.
Tehran said it sent technicians to the site to restore the flow of natural gas to Turkey.
Iran has been fighting Kurdish militants with the Party for Free Life of Kurdistan, or PJAK, for several weeks along the shared border with Iraq. Turkey is battling fighters with the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party.
Though pipelines have been targeted by militants in the past, there were no statements of responsibility or cause given for the explosion.
Iran exports around 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.
