Massive gas field audited in Turkmenistan

LONDON, May 26 (UPI) -- There is enough natural gas in a new field discovered in Turkmenistan to meet the demands of European consumers for 50 years, an audit determined.

British oil field auditing company Gaffney Cline, in a report set for a June release, estimates the South Yolotan gas field in Turkmenistan is the second largest deposit ever found, The Daily Telegraph newspaper in London reports.

The report puts the estimated reserves at the field at more than 700 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, enough to satisfy European demand for more than 50 years.

Gaffney Cline said the field could support European, Russian and Chinese energy markets. European customers, however, haven't had much success in striking gas deals with Ashgabat, The Daily Telegraph adds.

Turkmenistan is positioned to deliver natural gas from its giant Dauletabad field to Eastern countries through the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline.

The planned 1,043-mile pipeline will deliver 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas per year to Pakistan and India. Afghanistan gets the remaining 700 million cf planned for the pipeline.

Moscow expressed interest in the project in October and New Delhi has said Russian energy company Gazprom could serve as one of the suppliers for the project.
