OSLO, Norway, May 24 (UPI) -- The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority said Shell needs to overhaul its operating procedures in the North Sea following an oil accident in December.

Only one barrier was working after a device lodged itself in a well when Shell engineers were working to replace a gas valve on a platform at the Draugen field in the North Sea. The PSA said the incident had "major accident potential," The Daily Telegraph newspaper in London reports.

The PSA outlined a series of deficiencies ranging from poor daily logs to inadequate risk assessment at the field.

Shell agreed to the PSA recommendations and pledged to take a lessons-learned approach to future work in the North Sea.

Shell has a minority stake in the Draugen field, which is producing about 46,000 barrels of oil per day.
