UNIDO, Statoil team up on energy

VIENNA, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- An agreement with Norwegian energy company Statoil will help deliver sustainable energy to consumers in developing countries, the UNIDO director said.

The U.N. Industrial Development Organization announced it signed a deal with Statoil to explore alternative energy in the developing world.

"These objectives include creating sustainable energy access and industry in developing countries based primarily on local biomass and natural gas resources," said UNIDO Director General Kandeh Yumkella in a statement.

Statoil officials said the collaboration with UNIDO has the potential for "tangible" benefits to the everyday lives of people living in development countries. Executives added that ventures like the one with UNIDO shouldn't be taken on by companies like Statoil alone.

"However, by taking a first step, we hope to encourage others to join us in the endeavor of bringing clean energy to those who do not enjoy what most of us in the developed world take for granted," said Statoil Project Manager for Renewable Energy Sjur Haugen in a statement.

Both sides said they would focus on countries in Sub-Saharan African and Central and South America.
