NEW DELHI, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp. said Friday an oil pipeline off the coast of Mumbai burst, leaving a sheen stretching 1 mile from an oil platform.
ONGC said it discovered a leak about 1 mile from a platform tied to the Bassein oil and gas field about 50 miles off the Mumbai coast.
"ONGC has mobilized the pipeline repair vessel including three multi-support vessels to the site to ascertain the extent of leakage for containment and repair," the company said in a statement. "The initial assessment of extent of oil spill is about 1 mile long."
The oil company said it rerouted oil through a second artery and oil and gas wells connected to the platform were closed. ONGC said it anticipated a loss of about 25,000 barrels of crude oil from the facility, which typically pumps about 2 million barrels per day.
The Indian coast guard was notified of the spill, the company added. Indian Oil Secretary S. Sundareshan was quoted by The Wall Street Journal as saying the spill was under control.
"It is possible that very soon, the leak will be plugged and the pipeline will be put in operation," he said.
