
TRIPOLI, Libya, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The Libyan government aims to position the country as an important energy player while exploring renewable energy at home, a panel said.
Royal Dutch Shell last week announced it was examining a natural gas discovery in Libya and British supermajor BP is gearing up to explore for oil off the North African coast.
Tripoli aims to boost its power-generation capacity while solidifying its position as a regional energy powerhouse, the Emirati newspaper The National reports.
"Libya seeks to significantly contribute to regional and global programs in the energy sector, leveraging its well-positioned geographic location (between the) European and African continents," a report for a government panel in Tripoli read.
Officials in Tripoli during the summer unveiled plans to boost the development and exploration of natural gas in the country to support the domestic energy sector.
Leaders, meanwhile, said they would like to enhance to the amount of energy consumers in Libya get from solar and wind power.
