EU tackles climate change at grassroots

BRUSSELS, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Efforts to cut emissions at the local level should be backed by the European and international community, European lawmakers said from Brussels.

"The vital work in cutting emissions already under way at local and regional level must be better supported and coordinated on both a European and global scale," the European Commission said in a statement.

Nicola Beer, a European lawmaker representing Brussels at climate talks in Mexico, complained that cities and regions in the eurozone were doing more than most national governments when it came to tackling climate change.

Her resolution for delegates at the Mexico summit calls on the European Union to "resume a leading role in international climate change negotiations" and to take back its role as the global leader on climate action."

Mercedes Bresso, president of the European Committee of Regions, said climate change should be supported from the ground up.

"The Committee of the Regions is ready to reinforce its alliance with the European Commission in order to make Europe an international role model in tackling climate change at grassroots level," she said in a statement.
