Afren oil workers freed in Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Seven workers with British energy company Afren kidnapped off the coast of Nigeria were released unharmed, the company announced.

Afren said seven crew members were kidnapped and two others were injured Nov. 8 in what was believed to be one of the worst such attacks in more than a year.

In an updated statement on the incident, the company said all of the hostages had been freed.

"Further to the announcement made on Nov. 8 regarding a security breach offshore Nigeria, Afren is pleased to announce that the seven contractors being held hostage have all been released unharmed," the statement read.

There were no apparent claims of responsibility for the raid on the rig near the oil-rich Niger Delta.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, the main militant group in Nigeria, claimed responsibility for a deadly attack during the country's 50th anniversary of independence in October. The group also claimed a separate attack on an area rig during the weekend that resulted in the kidnapping of employees of Exxon Mobil.
