HOUSTON, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Texas pipeline operator Enterprise Products Partners violated the law in a June gas explosion that killed one worker and injured eight others, a regulator said.

Electrical workers installing utility poles in Johnson County, Texas, struck an unmarked natural gas pipeline, causing an explosion June 7.

The Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates natural gas production in the state, said Enterprise failed to mark the location of its underground pipeline, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The Texas regulator said Oklahoma's C&H Power Line Construction Co. violated the law as well because it failed to make proper inquiries regarding its work near the pipeline. The regulator said C&H asked about the pipeline before its work but never followed up.

Fred Haag, chief operations officer at C&H, was quoted in the Journal as saying Enterprise "never" made an effort to mark the pipeline.

The Journal said the closest marker for the pipeline was more than 1,000 feet from the pipeline.

Both companies face penalties from the regulator totaling $250,000.
