MOSCOW, June 29 (UPI) -- Experience gained by British oil company BP in controlling the Gulf of Mexico oil spill should be divulged, the head of Russian oil company Lukoil said.
Embattled BP chief Tony Hayward met in Moscow with Lukoil President Vagit Alekperov to discuss efforts to control the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The BP-operated Deepwater Horizon oil platform caught fire and sank April 22. Though BP engineers have placed a containment cap over a leaking well about 1 mile under the surface, oil continues to seep into the sensitive marshlands of the U.S. south.
Lukoil said in a statement that both sides during their Moscow talks focused on efforts in the Gulf of Mexico, the Platts news service reports.
"Alekperov, in particular, noted that the experience gained by BP from the accident and its consequences should become the property of the international oil community to prevent similar incidents in future," a Lukoil statement read.
BP is working on two relief wells that are expected to reach the failing well by August.
The April accident has caused the international community to re-examine offshore activity in deep waters, though oil executives note offshore reserves are among the most lucrative fields left in the world.
