CHARLESTON, W.Va., April 21 (UPI) -- The Kanawha River in West Virginia is closed to vessel traffic as salvage efforts begin at the sunken towing vessel Misty Dawn, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Tug boat Misty Dawn sank Monday, going down in the middle of the river. The captain, Greg Smith, died during the wreck. The cause of the sinking is under investigation.
The Coast Guard said the towing vessel was carrying about 4,000 gallons of fuel when it sank. The Coast Guard said it was working with pollution and salvage companies in the region to contain any pollution to the Kanawha River.
The river remains closed to barge traffic because the Misty Dawn went down in the middle of the waterway. Traffic will resume provided it doesn't interfere with dive activity, the Coast Guard said.
Salvage operations began Wednesday and continue through Thursday morning.
