COURBEVOIE, France, April 12 (UPI) -- French supermajor Total announced a decision to lead a working group to develop urban solar projects as part of an industrial consortium.

Total said it would join the so-called Positive Energy Consortium, which brings together industrial leaders to spur the development of green energy technology for commercial buildings.

Philippe Boisseau, the president of Total Gas & Power, said his company aimed to lead the way in developing solar technology in an office setting as part of the consortium.

"Our objective is to actively contribute to projects that allow us to more effectively manage fast-growing energy demand while reducing greenhouses gas emissions," he added.

Total said it would head a working group to develop solar power for use at office buildings. The company added that solar energy could be used with other technologies to create "positive energy buildings" -- buildings that create more energy than they use.

The French company conducts research on solar technology at laboratories in France, the United States, Switzerland, Belgium and Germany.
