ABUJA, Nigeria, March 17 (UPI) -- The Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. proposed a forum for shareholders to address challenges plaguing the national energy sector, officials said.
Violence and political instability in the oil-rich African nation impedes gas supplies and the functioning of national transit pipelines. Vandals and saboteurs often tap pipelines for black market activity.
Shell announced last week the temporary closure of two natural gas plants in the country as part of an effort to repair the Trans Forcados pipeline system damaged by militants.
A group calling itself People's Patriotic Revolutionary Force of the Joint Revolutionary Council claimed responsibility for attacking Shell facilities in the Niger Delta.
Levi Ajuonuma, a spokesman for the NNPC, said the purpose of the forum was to bring gas and power industry officials together "to brainstorm on the challenge" facing the Nigerian energy sector, Nigeria's Next newspaper reports.
The national power company in Nigeria estimates around 5,000 megawatts of power capacity is idled because of a lack of gas to power turbines.
The forum would bring together regulators and energy companies, including Exxon Mobil and Shell.
The NNPC scheduled the forum for Monday in Lagos.
