BRUSSELS, March 9 (UPI) -- EU members need to take action to contribute to the environmental well-being of the Black Sea, a Romanian delegation said in Brussels.
A Romanian delegation told the European Commission in Brussels that Bucharest saw room for improvement in environmental efforts under way in the Black Sea region.
Black Sea countries, the Romanian delegation said, "lack the necessary resources and institutional capacity" to tackle environmental challenges on their own.
Bucharest said, therefore, that a Black Sea environmental partnership was needed for EU-member states to facilitate environmental progress.
"By supporting this initiative, Romania stresses the need to generate new momentum in protecting the environment in the wider Black Sea region, making better use of the existing mechanisms and formats of cooperation, and engaging all the stakeholders," the delegation said.
Brussels hosts the formal launch of the Black Sea environmental partnership March 16.
