ABUJA, Nigeria, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Nigerian petroleum officials said the resumption of activity at two refineries would ease fuel shortages plaguing the oil-rich country.

Levi Ajuonuma, a spokesman for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., said the Kaduna and Warri refining companies resumed production after regular maintenance, Nigeria's Next newspaper reports Friday.

"I am glad to announce to Nigerians that the Turn-Around Maintenance of refineries embarked upon by the NNPC is beginning to pay off as the Kaduna refinery fully came on stream last Friday and has stabilized at 60 percent capacity," he announced.

Ajuonuma said the fuel shortage rocking the country should ease with the refineries back online.

A political shake-up following the return of the Nigerian president to Abuja after a lengthy medical leave and militant activity in the oil-rich Niger Delta region are dragging on the Nigerian energy sector. Lawmakers, meanwhile, said Abuja isn't providing adequate funding to ensure adequate fuel stocks.

Next said there was no independent confirmation that the refineries were brought online, however.
