BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Tehran is interested in purchasing as much as 350 billion cubic feet of natural gas from Azerbaijan in 2010, the Iranian envoy to Baku announced.
Mohammad Baqer Bahrami, the Iranian envoy to Baku, said his country was ready to increase its gas purchases from its northern neighbor, the Azeri news agency News.Az reports.
"Iran is ready to purchase as much gas in Azerbaijan as the country is able to supply," the envoy said.
Tehran said it needs to import natural gas from Azerbaijan for supplies for its northern provinces because the mountainous terrain prevents transits from energy-rich regions in the south of the country.
Azeri energy executives said they were interested in building transit pipelines to Iran in order to increase gas trade. Construction on a new pipeline could start in 2010.
Iran and Azerbaijan hold some of the largest natural gas deposits in the world. Azeri gas is lauded as a potential source for Europe's Nabucco gas pipeline. Iran, for its part, shares the largest natural gas field with Qatar.
Baku, however, said it was concerned Western sanctions on Tehran imposed for its controversial nuclear program could undermine current trade relations.
