LONDON, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- There is no doubt the Falkland Islands government is entitled to develop the natural resources in its territorial waters, the British government said.
British explorer Desire Petroleum announced Tuesday it began exploring for oil about 100 miles north of the Falkland Islands. The Argentine government complained the effort was a violation, describing the region as "occupied" British territory.
The Argentine government blocked a cargo ship from loading its oil cargo in early February following a formal protest to the British envoy to Buenos Aires.
London said the Falkland government is "entitled" to explore for oil and gas within its waters. Chris Bryant, the British foreign minister charged with the Latin America portfolio, said it was abundantly clear that Falkland Islanders want to remain British.
"We're also clear that the Falkland Islands government is entitled to develop a hydrocarbons industry within its waters," he said in a statement. "We remain focused on supporting the Falkland Islands government in developing this legitimate business in its territory."
Argentina and Britain fought a brief war over the islands in 1982. Bryant stressed, however, that "nobody" wants a return to conflict, noting both governments have working relationships in areas of climate change and sustainable development.
