UNIDO funds CCS road map

VIENNA, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- A $675,000 project to develop a road map for carbon capture and storage helps developing countries transition to green energy, U.N. officials said in Vienna.

The U.N. Industrial Development Organization through a $675,000 project with the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute works to develop a road map for carbon capture and storage for industrial processes.

Kandeh Yumkella, the director general for UNIDO, said there are knowledge gaps remaining in implementing CCS technology, especially for developing nations.

"This project will help address these obstacles by developing a technology road map for CCS across different industry sectors, and assist developing countries in their transition to a low-carbon economy," he said in a statement.

UNIDO said the pattern of energy consumption was "unsustainable," meaning advanced technologies were needed to mitigate the impact of climate change. CCS, UNIDO said, could contribute to the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2050.

The project will be monitored through a close cooperation with the International Energy Agency and the IEA Greenhouse Gas Research and Development Program. UNIDO expects the development of the road map to conclude by the end of the year.
