SOFIA, Bulgaria, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Gazprom chief Alexei Miller paid a working visit to Bulgaria Tuesday to meet with government officials to discuss the South Stream natural gas pipeline.
Miller met with Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov and Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to discuss energy ties between Moscow and Sofia. Specific attention was paid to the South Stream natural gas pipeline, the Russian energy giant said.
Russia aims to diversify its transit options to Europe with South Stream. The project is designed to carry as much as 2.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas each year through the Balkans to southern Europe.
Gazprom in January established a special project management department to oversee developments of South Stream. Deliveries through the pipeline are expected by 2015.
The route for South Stream remains unsettled, however, as officials in Serbia work out the route for the 280-mile South Stream leg through their country.
Gazprom said the Miller delegation shared the perception with this Sofia partners that South Stream "was ultimately important for diversifying the routes of Russian gas supply to Europe and raising the energy security."
