HELSINKI, Finland, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Natural gas piped to European consumers is the cheaper energy option, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said at a news conference in Finland.

Putin, during a media briefing with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, spoke in defense of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline as a cheap option for European consumers.

"As far as natural gas reaching Europe by pipelines is concerned, this gas will always be cheaper than liquefied gas," he said in a statement with the Finnish prime minister.

The Russian prime minister was in Helsinki for a meeting on environmental concerns in the Baltic Sea. Nord Stream would move Russian gas to European customers along the Baltic Sea floor.

Littoral states complain pipeline construction could harm the environment, though the project is moving closer to an official development date.

Russia aims to diversify its transit options in Europe with Nord Stream and its South Stream counterpart. Both projects avoid politically sensitive transit arteries in Ukraine.

Putin said that "fortunately or unfortunately" the future of energy for Europe still focused on conventional hydrocarbons.
