Bahrain, Iran discuss gas terms

TEHRAN, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A delegation from Bahrain arrived in the Iranian capital Tuesday as Iran plans for its annual economic summit with transit nation Turkey.

Energy talks between Manama and Tehran stalled in 2009 over the fallout from Iranian claims that Bahrain was a province of Iran. Iranian officials later discredited the claims, describing the row as insignificant.

A delegation of oil and gas ministers from Bahrain arrived in Tehran for a fifth round of negotiations on importing gas from Iran, the semiofficial Fars News Agency reports.

Talks in November focused on the import of about 1 billion cubic feet per day from South Pars.

Bahrain is allied with the United States, hosting the U.S. 5th Fleet. The U.S. Senate in January approved a measure that would allow Washington to penalize foreign entities that play a role in Iran's energy sector.

Tehran, meanwhile, is preparing for a delegation from Ankara to take part in an annual bilateral summit. Turkey is moving to position itself as a major oil and gas transit nation, hosting several major energy arteries.
