Tullow makes oil and gas find in Uganda

LONDON, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- London-listed Tullow Oil announced Friday it encountered its largest net pay of oil and gas in the Butiaba region in the Lake Albert basin in Uganda.

Tullow announced its Kasamene-2 appraisal well encountered nearly 128 feet of net oil pay and 26 feet of net gas pay. Kasamene-2 is one of two appraisal wells being drilled to expand development of the field.

"Encountering the largest net pay thickness in Butiaba to date is an outstanding result, confirming the lateral quality and extent of the Victoria Nile Delta reservoirs and enabling fast-tracked development of the Kasamene field," said Paul McDade, Tullow's chief operating officer.

In March 2009 another well at Kasamene flowed at more than 3,500 barrels of oil per day.

Tullow holds three licenses in the Lake Albert basin along with Heritage Oil. Four additional appraisal wells are planned for 2010.

Tullow said it plans to expand operations in Uganda by buying stakes in two oil blocks owned by Heritage. Tullow in turn would sell off some of its interests to a third party to help develop the region.

Any plan for the Heritage deal requires the approval of the Uganda government.
