MOSCOW, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A delegation of Iranian oil ministers arrived in Moscow to meet with Gazprom officials to discuss developments at Iran's giant South Pars gas field.
Alexander Medvedev, the deputy chairman at Gazprom, welcomed Noghrekar Shiraz, Iran's deputy energy minister, to his Moscow headquarters to discuss work in the South Pars gas complex in the Persian Gulf, the largest gas field in the world.
Both sides discussed the development of the gas sector in Iran, the Russian gas monopoly said. Gazprom noted it was "elaborating (on) a 'road map' of cooperation between Russia and Iran in the energy sector."
Gazprom joined French supermajor Total and Malaysia's Petronas in two development phases of the South Pars field.
Tehran said it saw Gazprom as a possible partner in the long-delayed Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline from South Pars. Washington has lobbied aggressively to persuade New Delhi and Islamabad to back away from IPI because of its potential economic benefit to Tehran.
Tehran said it plans to embark on a five-year program of economic expansion beginning in March. The country aims to increase its gas production from 21 billion to 35 billion cubic feet of gas per day.
