DOHA, Qatar, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- A Qatari subsidiary of Exxon Mobil and Qatar Petroleum signed an agreement to move forward with the development of a petrochemical complex.

Exxon Mobil Chemical Qatar Ltd. and QP signed an agreement for the complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar.

Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, the Qatari energy minister and deputy premier, said the agreement contributed to national objectives in the energy sector.

Once built, the complex would include the world's largest plant for the breakdown of saturated hydrocarbons, the largest polyethylene plant and one of the largest ethylene glycol plants in the world.

The Ras Laffan complex will use hydrocarbons for the North Field gas complex in Qatar, the world's largest non-associated natural gas field.

Products from the Ras Laffan complex would serve the global petrochemical sector, with a focus on Asian markets, Exxon Mobil said.
