SHADEGAN, Iran, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Iranian emergency responders are struggling to protect a massive wetland from fires and contamination from an oil well that exploded early this week.

Officials in the southern Iranian province of Khuzestan said an explosion at an oil well is threatening the Shadegan International Wildlife Refuge.

Abdul Reza Ehsaninia, a regional governor, said the oil spill was threatening the watershed in the region and is close to reaching the Jarahi River, Iran's Press TV reports.

"If the oil spill reaches the river it will pollute the water supply of people living downstream ... as well as wildlife in the Shadegan wetland," he said.

Ehsaninia said the well is still engulfed in flames and oil has been spilling from the site since Monday. Firefighters and other first responders are on the scene in an effort to control the blaze and prevent the oil from spilling into local waterways.

Iranian environmental officials said they received permission from the Oil Ministry to seal the well as soon as possible before the incident reaches a "catastrophic stage," Press TV said.
