KARBALA, Iraq, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Hundreds of lawyers and civil officials in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala protested in front of the Iranian consulate following the seizure of a border well.
Rabie al-Massoudi, the head of the Iraqi bar association, told the Voices of Iraq news agency that nearly 1,000 lawyers and civil service officials demonstrated in front of the Iranian consulate to protest the seizure of an oil well at al-Fakkah field in Maysan province.
"The demonstrators have headed to the Iranian consulate to make their voices heard," he said, adding the seizure was a "breach of Iraq's sovereignty and a flagrant violation of human rights."
Iranian forces last week took control of the oil well near the border. Baghdad said the incident was settled during the weekend as diplomatic tensions eased.
Iraqi workers have since returned to the site.
Iyad Samarrai, the speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, said earlier this week lawmakers expected to hear from Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on the well incident in the coming days.
