ASTANA, Kazakhstan, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A new pipeline from Turkmenistan to China contributes substantially to the diversity of the regional energy sector, top Russian officials said in Kazakhstan.

Chinese President Hu Jintao joined the leaders of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan last week for the inauguration of a 1,138-mile pipeline to deliver gas from Turkmenistan to China.

Igor Shuvalov, Russia's first deputy premier, said during a summit in Kazakhstan during the weekend that Moscow viewed the project as a boost to regional energy security, ITAR-Tass reports.

"The more diverse and the better the infrastructure in the (Commonwealth of Independent States), the bigger our contribution to global energy security," he said.

His comments came during an informal meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States, an organization of former Soviet republics.

The pipeline starts at the Turkmen border with Uzbekistan and then through Kazakhstan to the Xinjiang region in northwest China. A second leg of the pipeline goes into operation in 2010.

It has the capacity to pump some 1.6 trillion cubic feet of gas per year.

Turkmenistan had supplied most of its gas to Russia, though that relationship soured in April following a pipeline explosion that Ashgabat blamed on Russian energy giant Gazprom.
