WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- The trade organization for leading U.S. airlines announced a group of 12 international airlines signed a measure backing the use of alternative aviation fuels.
The Air Transport Association of America Inc. announced a "core group" of airlines signed memoranda of understanding with AltAir Fuels LLC and Rentech Inc. for alternative fuels.
The AltAir measure envisions the production of 75 million gallons of fuel per year from camelina oils and other feedstocks. Rentech would produce 250 million gallons of synthetic fuel derived from coal or petroleum coke, which the ATA said reduces the industry's carbon footprint.
Glenn Tilton, the chairman of the ATA board, described the MOU as a proactive measure to promote energy security and highlight the potential for alternative fuels.
"We urge the U.S. government and the investment community also to do their part to further support this critical energy opportunity," he added.
Twelve airlines from the United States, Canada, Germany and Mexico signed the MOU, including cargo giants FedEx Express and UPS Airlines, national carriers and the discount AirTran Airways.
