Statoil lauds gas for green future

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Substantial reductions in carbon emissions are possible only through the increased use of natural gas, said executives with Norwegian energy giant Statoil.

Helge Lund, the chief executive at Statoil, said greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced through the expanded use of natural gas as an alternative resource.

"Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel in terms of carbon dioxide emissions and particles and is the perfect bridge towards a low-carbon future," he said.

Lund made his comments to a delegation of executives in the gas industry on the sidelines of the climate summit in Copenhagen, Denmark.

He went on to laud the potential to use carbon capture and storage technologies, which he said could capture some 3 million tons of Norwegian emissions.

"We are a company with huge gas reserves," he said. "If we succeed in commercializing (CCS) technology, natural gas can become an even bigger part of the solution to the climate challenge."
