JUNEAU, Alaska, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Further exploration of Alaskan natural resources is required as oil fields are showing signs of decline, said Alaskan Gov. Sean Parnell.

Alaskan lawmakers last week in a letter to the Republican governor expressed concern that his plans to increase the state's oil tax would push developers out of the area.

Parnell instead blamed the environmental regulations of the U.S. federal government for holding up further exploration, which he said could create more than 30,000 new jobs for Alaskans, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports.

Oil developers gave mixed reports on the resource potential for Alaska. Exxon Mobil said it plans to move forward with developments at its Point Thompson project by the end of 2014. BP, for its part, said it made more economic sense to focus on the Gulf of Mexico. ConocoPhillips, meanwhile, announced that for the first time in more than 40 years, there are no plans to drill new exploration wells in Alaska in 2010

Parnell dismissed the decision by ConocoPhillips, saying the company simply could not get the necessary permits in time.
