Russia sets its eyes on South Pars

TEHRAN, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Russian petrochemical companies could find development opportunities in the South Pars gas field of Iran, Russian energy officials said.

Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said SIBUR, Russia's leading petrochemicals company, was possibly interested in building petrochemical plants in Iran, Iran's Fars News Agency reports.

"First of all, we can use the blocks of the South Pars gas field, where the Russian gas major, Gazprom, is operating right now," Shmatko added.

The consideration follows a series of bilateral cooperation agreements reached during an economic and trade summit in Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Shmatko oversaw the endorsement of several agreements in the Iranian oil and gas sector.

Shmatko arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, during the weekend for the eighth meeting of the Iran-Russian Joint Economic Commission.
