TEHRAN, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A Turkish agreement to acquire marketing rights for Iranian gas indicates the Persian country could be a Nabucco supplier, Iranian lawmakers said.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his visit to Tehran in October said Nabucco gas pipeline partners would come to realize the potential benefits of Iran's vast gas reserves.

"I believe that the Nabucco (partners) will realize the importance of Iran's participation sooner or later," he said.

Moaied Hosseini Sadr, an Iranian lawmaker on the national Energy Commission, told the semiofficial Fars News Agency that deals reached with Turkey point to involvement in Nabucco.

"Turkey intends to acquire 50 percent of the (gas) marketing right and inject the natural gas it buys from Iran into the Nabucco pipeline and deliver it to the target countries," he said.

Europe aims to diversify its regional energy sector with the Nabucco pipeline by easing its dependence on Russian gas and politically sensitive transit options in Ukraine.

Despite the political will to move forward with the project, firm commitments from supplier nations are slow to develop.

The first gas supplies for Nabucco are expected by 2014.
