MILAN, Italy, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Italian energy giant Eni and Croatian oil and company INA began producing gas from six wells located in the Croatian waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Eni announced production from six wells at the offshore Annamaria A field will produce as much as 56.5 million cubic feet of natural gas per year at peak capacity though a joint operator, INAgip.

Eni said the gas production from Annamaria would contribute "significantly" to the gas demands of Croatia and Italy.

Eni began operating in Croatia in 1996 when it created INAgip. Current production from the joint operating company eclipses 176 billion cubic feet of gas per day. Production from Annamaria makes up approximately 28 billion cubic feet of that capacity.

The Italian and Croatian governments approved development for Annamaria fields that straddle the maritime boundaries. Annamaria B, a linked in platform in Italian waters, is moving closer to a final phase for production, Eni said.
